Closing your pool for the season? Before you pull the drain plug, remember that pool and spa water should never be discharged into a storm drain, roadway, or directly into a stream.
Storm drains carry water directly to our local creeks and waterways. Pool water may contain chlorine, bromine, salt, and other chemicals that can be harmful to aquatic life and water quality.
Before draining your pool or spa:

Stop adding chemicals and allow chlorine levels to decrease.

Test the water before discharge.

Direct water slowly onto a grassy or vegetated area on your own property where it can soak naturally into the ground.

Make sure the water does not run onto the street, neighboring properties, storm drains, or waterways.

Avoid draining during or immediately after heavy rain when the ground is already saturated.
A little planning when closing your pool can make a big difference in protecting Buckingham Township’s streams and watersheds.
Remember: Only rain belongs in the storm drain!
