About eBird and the Buckingham Wetlands
eBird is a global, online bird observation and tracking platform created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It allows birdwatchers, researchers, and nature enthusiasts to log bird sightings, contribute to citizen science, and track species data in real-time. Since its launch, eBird has become one of the world’s largest biodiversity-related science projects, helping monitor bird populations and inform conservation efforts.
The Buckingham Wetlands have been an active part of the eBird network since March 2008. Over the years, this valuable habitat has yielded sightings of 90 different bird species, with the list continuing to grow each season. As of March 2025, 26 species have already been recorded for the year, showcasing the area’s ongoing importance for bird diversity and observation. Residents are encouraged to visit the wetlands and contribute to the eBird database, helping support both local and global bird conservation.
Why would Bird Town Pennsylvania promote certifications/registrations?
While each program has a primary focus, each offers a very similar path to sustainable and wildlife friendly development. After all, what is good for pollinators is good for birds and vice versa. A garden intended to provide good habitat for bees and butterflies is also providing food for birds.
Our goal is to engage all property owners and managers who care about providing good habitat for ecological diversity and a sustainable future. It is our vision to build highways of sustenance and safety to counterbalance the tremendous loss of living space for birds, plants, and all native species.
