Buckingham Township Water and Wastewater Department received two calls from residents of Fenton’s Corner reporting sewer-like odors in the Fenton’s Corner community surrounding the wastewater treatment plant lagoon.
Wastewater treatment facilities process sewage and organic material, and at times this can produce gases such as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, which carry noticeable odors. While occasional odors can occur, Buckingham Township takes every concern seriously and is committed to addressing them promptly.
In the beginning of June, the aerator that supplies oxygen to the influent lagoon at Fenton’s Corner was taken out of service for repair. We ordered a new aerator, but it unexpectedly took eight (8) weeks to receive. While the lagoon was not getting adequate air, it caused hydrogen sulfides to build up. We placed the new aerator in service this morning. With the new aerator installed it can cause odors that should dissipate within a day or two.
We want to assure residents that we actively investigate any source of concerns and implement corrective measures to minimize impacts. We are always exploring both immediate and long-term solutions to reduce odor emissions and improve operational practices.
Residents who notice odors are always encouraged to report them to 215-794-8854 or contact@buckinghampa.org so staff can track and respond to conditions in real time.
We thank the Fenton’s Corner community for its patience and understanding as we work to address this matter quickly and effectively.
